Way back in the 1940s, Mylapore was the primary seat of Carnatic music and Rasikas from various parts of Chennai used to throng the place to listen to stalwarts.It was on one such occasion that noted actor, Chittoor Nagayya while returning from a concert of G.N. Balasubramaniam saw several music lovers walking towards T.Nagar, Completely drenched by rain. Seeing the difficulty faced by music lovers, An idea of starting a sabha in and around T.Nagar occurred in his mind. This idea was concretised and the sabha was given the name Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha by the doyen of music Sri Ariyakudi Ramanuja iyengar.SRI THYAGA BRAHMA GANA SABHA as it is otherwise called “VANI MAHAL” meaning the abode of Saraswathi is one of the oldest and most popular Sabha promoting Traditional Music and Drama.

“Sri The Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha” also called Vani Mahal, hosts regular classical concerts, dramas, dance performances and also upanyasams and Nama sankeerthana. The facility has two Auditoriums of differing sizes for Art performances and a relatively small hall for Exhibitions. The Sabha is also conducting vocal music and dance classes run by eminent artists. All the halls can be availed by members and non members for conducting  their cultural performances only.
