Vani Mahal was started in 1944 by Chittoor V. Nagayya, a distinguished film actor of yesteryears. Chittoor Nagayya established Vani Mahal mainly to provide a good Sabha for the residents of T Nagar to listen to kutcheries.
The membership of the Sabha grew rapidly from year to year and experts like Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar,
D.K. Pattammal, M.S. Subhalakshmi, Maharajapuram Santhanam, Madurai Mani, M.L. Vasanthakumari, K.J. Yesudas (Vocal), Chowdiah (Violin), Palghat Mani (Mridangam), Balasaraswati (Dance), Nawab Rajamanickam (Theatre) and Embar Vijayaragavachariar (Harikatha) were regular patrons.
The Sabha had gala celebrations for its Diamond Jubilee in November 2005. Vani Mahal was completely renovated and modern auditoriums were built.
Thousands of music, dramas and dance performances continue to be held at Vani Mahal to packed crowds. Generations of talented performers and audience will continue to benefit from the service rendered by Vani Mahal to give life to traditional art.
